Foods to Avoid with Braces

Now that you’ve gotten traditional braces, you may be thinking that you can continue with the diet of your choice. Not quite.  While not all food is prohibited, you may need to make some adjustments in how you prepare or consume your meals. Take a look at what you should avoid, and what you can do to prevent braces from breaking due to what you eat.

Worst Foods For Braces

In general, three textures should be avoided: crunchy, sticky and tough. The following is a short, but not exhaustive, list of foods you should remove from your diet while you have braces.

Crunchy

  • Potato chips
  • Cereal
  • Granola
  • Tacos
  • Popcorn
  • Ice
  • Croutons
  • Nuts

Sticky

  • Bubblegum
  • Chewy candy (Starburst, Tootsie Rolls, jelly beans, etc)
  • Caramel and caramel candies
  • Granola bars

Tough

  • Jerky
  • Steak
  • Corn on the Cob

Non-Food Items

This entails other items that you might chew or nibble on out of nervousness or habit but should avoid while you have Miami braces.

  • Pen caps
  • Pencils
  • Fingernails
