Common Problems That Braces Can Treat
You might think that your misaligned teeth are too complicated for braces to work, but the truth is that it has worked for many patients just like you. Whether it’s a combination of conditions or just one major alignment issue, we can guarantee that Dr. Stephen Grussmark’s orthodontic treatments can help. Take a look at just a few examples below.
An overbite is when the teeth in the upper jaw protrude unnaturally over the bottom half. Rarely is it due to jaw alignment, and instead could be the teeth being pulled out from their original position. This can be caused early by thumb-sucking habits, pacifiers, sippy cups, yanking or tearing on things with your teeth, or pushing your tongue against the back of these teeth.
An underbite is when the lower arch of teeth are protruding in front of the upper teeth in some way. This can be caused in a similar way to an overbite, through thumb-sucking, using teeth as tools, pushing your tongue against your teeth, etc.
An open bite is when the upper, and sometimes lower teeth too, have lifted away from their place and flare out slightly. This can make chewing, drinking, or speaking difficult for you, with such a wide gap between your teeth.
A crossbite is when your smile overlaps one arch or the other in different ways. For example, your upper front teeth may overlap the lower front teeth, but the upper back teeth are overlapped by the lower ones. Different combinations of these strange crosses can cause different disadvantages in patients but are still fixable with braces.
As the name suggests, wide gaps between teeth can also be common in patients like you with misalignment issues. These gaps make it hard to chew or eat naturally and can lead to other areas of your mouth becoming crowded.
This category entails any other method of misalignment that may not fall into the options above. Sometimes, it can only be one or two teeth that are out of place, instead of a whole arch of teeth. Ask Dr. Grussmark about what options are available for your case.
